Top News Story! 'Term of Endearment'!

Florida (WCJB) -- Joe Oliver, George Zimmerman's friend went on television today to defend him. But Oliver's defense was a little, uhh, odd. After saying that Zimmerman is in hiding and doing "better" but initially "couldn't stop crying," he was asked a question about the racial epithet some say Zimmerman muttered while talking to the 911 operator. Oliver's explanation: Zimmerman didn't call Trayvon Martin a "coon."
Oliver continues, "I spoke with my teenage daughter yesterday and the word in question, it's the difference between a C and a G, from what I understand. And 'goon' is apparently a term of endearment in the high schools these days." Furthermore, "I don't know of anyone younger than 40 who uses 'coon' as a racial epithet."

"The evidence and testimony we have so far does not establish that Mr. Zimmerman did not act in self-defense. We don't have anything to dispute his claim of self-defense, at this point, with the evidence and testimony that we have."
-- Statement by Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee on why George Zimmerman has not been arrested for the killing of an unarmed African-American, 17 year old male.
Orlando, Florida -- The parents of a black teenager shot to death by a Hispanic neighborhood watch captain in Florida told demonstrators in New York they will keep fighting to get justice for their son. Seventeen year-old Trayvon Martin (pictured right) was killed Feb. 26, in Sanford, Fla. He was returning to a gated community in the city after buying candy at a convenience store. He was unarmed and was wearing a hooded sweat shirt, called a hoodie. The neighborhood watch captain, George Zimmerman (pictured left) has not been charged in the shooting. Zimmerman has said the teen attacked him and he shot him in self-defense.
Police are coming under fire for missing a possible clue in the investigation: a racist remark that shooter George Zimmerman may have muttered under his breath just moments before he shot and killed Trayvon Martin. According to multiple sources, Zimmerman may have muttered "fucking coons" as he pursued Martin while he was on the phone with 911. The Sanford Police Department admitted to one source that its investigators had indeed missed the remark, only a day after the federal Department of Justice announced that it had begun a possible hate crime investigation.
"Our investigation is color blind and based on the facts and circumstances, not color. I know I can say that until I am blue in the face, but as a white man in a uniform, I know it doesn't mean anything to anybody."
-- Statement by Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee to the South Florida Sentinel, Thursday, March 22, 2012.
The remark captured on the 911 call is not the only time accusations of racism have been made in the media against George Zimmerman. One source wrote that neighbors interviewed said that "Zimmerman went door-to-door asking residents to be on the lookout, specifically referring to young black men who appeared to be outsiders, and warned that some were caught lurking."
The Florida shooting has ignited a furor against the police department of the Orlando suburb of 53,500 people, prompting rallies and a protest in Gov. Rick Scott's office on Tuesday. Sanford city commissioners on Wednesday voted 3-2 to express "no confidence" in Police Chief Bill Lee Jr. over the handling of the fatal shooting. The commission can't fire Lee, however, because the police chief reports to the city manager.
At a brief press conference Thursday afternoon, the police chief of Sanford, Fla., said he was temporarily stepping aside as a result of criticism of his investigation of the killing of Trayvon Martin. Lee said Florida law prevented him from charging Zimmerman, which has sparked outrage nationwide.

Attorney Benjamin Crump (pictured left) holds a news conference Tuesday to present cellphone records that he says are evidence that Trayvon Martin, 17, was killed in cold blood. He says the cellphone records prove Martin was on the phone with his girlfriend at the time he was confronted in a gated community in Sanford, Fla., by George Zimmerman, 28. The Florida teen, Trayvon, was apparently chatting on a cellphone with his 16-year-old girlfriend when he was confronted -- and then killed -- by the self-appointed neighborhood watch captain, Zimmerman (pictured above, right). That call, says the attorney for the slain 17-year-old's family, is proof that the man did not fire in self-defense but was actually the aggressor.
Benjamin Crump, the attorney representing the Martin family, urged immediate action. He said at the news conference that he wants Zimmerman arrested -- now -- for "killing Trayvon Martin in cold blood." The case has taken on racial overtones because Zimmerman had contacted police to alert them to Martin's presence in the neighborhood, reporting him as a young black male who was acting suspiciously. "The dots have all been connected," Crump told the media. "We don't understand how he's not arrested. The family worries that the more time passes it will be swept under the rug."
The girl, whose family did not want her to be named, told media sources that she was talking to Martin when he said he believed he was being followed. "He said this man was watching him, so he put his hoodie on," the girl said. She then heard Trayvon say to the man, "What are you following me for?" The man then reportedly said, "What are you doing around here?" The girl said she believes somebody then pushed Martin because she heard his ear piece fall, and then the line went dead.
The U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI have launched a probe of the shooting, and Seminole County state attorney Norm Wolfinger announced Tuesday that he would bring the case before a grand jury next month. If Martin's girlfriend testifies about what she heard that day, it could potentially undermine Zimmerman's claim to police that he opened fire on Martin because he feared for his own safety.

Sanford, Florida (WCJB) -- Protesters upset about the shooting death of an unarmed Florida teen rallied outside a local courthouse Monday, demanding the arrest of a neighborhood watch captain who told police he shot the teen in self-defense. Martin was carrying a drink and candy when George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch captain, called 911 to report a suspicious man, authorities said. The 911 dispatcher told Zimmerman not to confront him. But by the time police arrived, Martin lay dead with a gunshot wound in the chest, according to Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee (pictured left). Zimmerman told police he shot the teen in self-defense, authorities said, and remains free as the state attorney investigates. Police said he has not been charged because there are no grounds to disprove his story of what happened.
Many carried signs in remembrance of Trayvon Martin, 17 (pictured below, center) who was shot on his way from the store to the Sanford home of his father's fiancee last month. "Gone but not forgotten," read one that had a picture of the young man wearing a football uniform. "No justice for Trayvon. No peace for Sanford!" read another. Inside the Seminole County Courthouse, a handful of student protesters and a law professor from Florida A&M University met with a representative of the state attorney's office to discuss the ongoing investigation. Assistant State Attorney Pat Whitaker told the group it would take several weeks to look at the case, but that the "investigation of the Sanford police needs to be greatly supplemented," Jasmine Rand, the FAMU professor, said after the meeting.
The state attorney's office also said a voice analysis would be conducted on 911 calls from the night of the shooting to determine who was yelling for help, students said. A spokeswoman for the state attorney's office confirmed Whitaker met with the group, but declined to comment on the specifics of what was said. According to the 911 calls released on Friday, terrified neighbors implored dispatchers to send police as a voice in the background screamed for help. According to Sgt. David Morgenstern of the Sanford police, Zimmerman (pictured left) called 911 46 times since 2001.
A Justice Department official said Monday that federal authorities are monitoring Martin's case. "The (Justice Department's) Community Relations Service will be in Sanford this week. They will be working with civil rights leaders, community leaders, and local law enforcement to address tensions," said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

A 29-year-old San Bernardino man who died after being Tasered and pepper sprayed by police officers attempting to take him into custody outside a board-and-care facility was mentally ill, his mother said. Police responded to a disturbance call in the 1100 block of East 26th Street just after 9 a.m. Tuesday. Jonathan White was allegedly yelling and threatening residents, San Bernardino Police Lt. Gwendolyn Waters said.
His mother, Janice White, told media sources her son (pictured left) suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. "He just went crazy on me," she said. "I had to call the police. He started going off and throwing things and he took off his clothes and everything and was just yelling at nobody. He was just standing there yelling for no reason." She told dispatchers it would take several officers to control her son. When officers attempted to take White into custody, he resisted, police said. Officers then used a Taser and pepper spray to control White, without success, and struggled with him until more officers arrived to assist, police said. Paramedics were evaluating White at the scene when he stopped breathing. He was taken to St. Bernardine Medical Center. At 10:10am, St. Bernardine Medical Center pronounced White dead. An autopsy will be conducted this week to determine cause of death. The information will be used to investigate if White's death was accidental or if criminal charges should be filed against the officers. A coroner's investigation will determine the cause of death.

Fred Hampton (August 30, 1948 -- December 4, 1969) was an African-American activist and deputy chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party (BPP). He was killed as he lay in bed in his apartment by a tactical unit of the Cook County, Illinois State's Attorney's Office (SAO), in conjunction with the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Hampton's death was chronicled in the 1971 documentary film The Murder of Fred Hampton, as well as an episode of the critically acclaimed documentary series Eyes on the Prize.
Hampton was born on August 30, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Maywood, a suburb to the west of the city. His parents had moved north from Louisiana, and both worked at the Argo Starch Company. As a youth, Hampton was gifted both in the classroom and on the athletic field, having a strong desire to play center field for the New York Yankees, and graduating from Proviso East High School with honors in 1966.
Following his graduation Hampton enrolled at Triton Junior College in nearby River Grove, Illinois, majoring in pre-law. He studied law to become more familiar with the law, using it as a defense against police. He and fellow Black Panthers would follow police, watching out for police brutality using this knowledge of law as a defense. He also became active in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), assuming leadership of the Youth Council of the organization's West Suburban Branch. In his capacity as an NAACP youth organizer, Hampton began to show signs of his natural leadership abilities; from a community of 27,000, he was able to muster a youth group 500-members strong. He worked to get more and better recreational facilities established in the neighborhoods, and to improve educational resources for Maywood's impoverished black community. Through his involvement with the NAACP, Hampton hoped to achieve social change through nonviolent activism and community organizing.
About the same time that Hampton was successfully organizing young African Americans for the NAACP, the Black Panther Party (BPP) started rising to national prominence. Hampton was quickly attracted to the Black Panthers' approach, which was based on a ten-point program of a mix of black self-determination and certain elements of Maoism. Hampton joined the Party and relocated to downtown Chicago, and in November 1968 he joined the Party's nascent Illinois chapter — founded by Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) organizer Bob Brown in late 1967.
Over the next year, Hampton and his associates made a number of significant achievements in Chicago. Perhaps his most important accomplishment was his brokering of a nonaggression pact between Chicago's most powerful street gangs. Emphasizing that racial and ethnic conflict between gangs would only keep its members entrenched in poverty, Hampton strove to forge a class-conscious, multi-racial alliance between the BPP, Students for a Democratic Society, the Blackstone Rangers, the National Young Lords in Chicago, the Young Patriots, the Brown Berets and the Red Guard Party. In May 1969, Hampton called a press conference to announce that a truce had been declared among this "rainbow coalition," a phrase coined by Hampton and made popular over the years by Rev. Jesse Jackson, who eventually appropriated the name in forming his own unrelated coalition, Rainbow PUSH.
Hampton's organizing skills, substantial oratorical gifts, and personal charisma allowed him to rise quickly in the Black Panthers. Once he became leader of the Chicago chapter, he organized weekly rallies, worked closely with the BPP's local People's Clinic, taught political education classes every morning at 6am, and launched a project for community supervision of the police. Hampton was also instrumental in the BPP's Free Breakfast Program. When Brown left the Party with Stokely Carmichael in the FBI-fomented SNCC/Panther split, Hampton assumed chairmanship of the Illinois state BPP, automatically making him a national BPP deputy chairman. As the Panther leadership across the country began to be decimated by the impact of the FBI's COINTELPRO, Hampton's prominence in the national hierarchy increased rapidly and dramatically. Eventually, Hampton was in line to be appointed to the Party's Central Committee's Chief of Staff. He would have achieved this position had it not been for his death on the morning of December 4, 1969.

B.A.R.T. Police Violence Continues
November 22, 2009
OAKLAND — A man was arrested at the West Oakland BART station November 22nd and held on battery charges after a B.A.R.T. police officer shoved the suspect through a thick glass window, which broke during the arrest. The BART police officer badly cut himself during his attack on the suspect at the scene of the crime. The B.A.R.T. officer, whose name was not released, badly cut his face by breaking the glass. The lacerations required several stitches. The officer reportedly suffered a concussion. Gibson also was injured by the glass, along his right hand and on his head, but the injuries did not require stitches.
Two plainclothes police officers, one each from the corrupt Oakland and racist Alameda departments, were riding the train and responded to help the officer with the arrest, Hartwig said. Gibson was arrested and taken to a hospital. He was later taken to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on felony charges of battery and resisting an officer, and a misdemeanor charge of being intoxicated in public. BART officials held a news conference today to address the incident because a video of the arrest was posted on YouTube.com. Posted under the title "BART cop breaks window w/drunk guy's face," the video is shot from inside a train and shows Michael Joseph Gibson, a 37-year-old San Leandro man, arguing with other riders.
The officer involved was a six-year veteran at the racist Contra Costa Sheriff's Department when he came to the BART police force in May 2009. "While at BART," the officer had not been involved in any use-of-force incidents, officials said. The officer is on paid leave while he heals from the injuries, which prevent him from being able to do his job.
Bay Area Rapid Transit Police

OAKLAND — A Black man died after a [White] BART [Police] officer [shot him in the back] early Thursday at the Fruitvale station, authorities said. The man was identified by his family and authorities as Oscar Grant, 22. The shooting occurred about 2:15 a.m. on the platform where a Dublin-Pleasanton train from San Francisco had stopped, BART spokesman Jim Allison said.
The Chief of B.A.R.T. police, Gary Gee (pictured above) is refusing to comment on the shooting. Prior to the release of the video depicting the shooting and others like it, B.A.R.T. officials held press conferences attempting to deny the existence of the shooting video, justify and minimize the shooting. The release of the video(s) clearly show that B.A.R.T. officials attempted to mislead the public regarding the circumstances surrounding the unlawful, unjustified shooting that led to Mr. Grant's death.
As the following video shows, the Black man was lying on the ground subdued by several other BART police officers, when the White Police Officer drew his gun and fired a fatal shot into the back of Mr. Grant.

With the release of the video(s), B.A.R.T. police now allege:
"A recent report by the San Francisco Chronicle says that some believe the officer thought he was holding a taser gun, instead of a gun with bullets in it."
Related B.A.R.T. Police Shootings:
November 15, 1992: "Jerrold Hall, 19 (An African-American male), is fatally shot in the back of the head by a B.A.R.T. police officer, Copwatch spearheads demonstrations and speaks out at investigative hearings, in the courtroom, to the media, and in the streets, demanding the officer be tried for murder."
The results of the FBI investigation of the shooting of Jerrold Hall in the back of the head by the [B.A.R.T. police officer], Fred Crabtree, [have never been made public]. The investigation was over in April 1992 and was sent to the Justice Department. As of this writing, no ruling has come down yet. Letters [were] sent to Janet Reno and to the acting head of the Justice Department's Civil Rights office, with no response. The Alameda County District Attorney [at the time], John Meehan, also refused to prosecute Officer Crabtree.
BART is supposed to have disciplined BART Police Officer Fred Crabtree for firing a warning shot, which was against policy, before [he fired] the shot that killed Jerrold. No one knows what the discipline was. Also, new evidence indicate[d] that in fact the first shot [fired by Officer Crabtree] may [...] have hit Jerrold. Worst of all is that BART would discipline Crabtree for firing shots into a tree, yet clear him for taking a human life.

As of January 6, 2009, Johannes Mehserle, 27 [has been identified as] the BART police officer who fatally shot [Oscar Grant] on the Fruitvale Station platform in Oakland early New Year's Day
The Alameda County District Attorney, Tom Orloff has spoken regarding filing criminal charges against Mr. Mehserle. He stated: ""By and large, police officers have been reacting to some type of situation before they shoot someone that usually provides a legal justification," said District Attorney Tom Orloff, who has seen dozens of police shooting cases during his nearly four-decade career as a prosecutor."
It sounds as if D.A. Orloff is establishing grounds for not pursuing criminal charges against the B.A.R.T. Police Officer, Johannes Mehserle.
